Pinehurst, North Carolina, nestled in the rolling Sandhills Region, holds a worldwide reputation for premier golfing territory. Pinehurst was settled in 1895 by philanthropist James Tuft, who was looking for an area to build a health resort where northerners could escape the brutal winters. Pinehurst at first was nothing but clear-cut rolling hills of sand. Tuft's resort grew and flourished and he planted 222,000 trees throughout the region. Today, Pinehurst is a lovely "village in the forest", attracting many retirees to the area.

What started as a health resort soon became Golf Heaven. The Pinehurst Resort still includes luxury spa facilities but its primary focus today is golf. Legendary golfers such as Jack Nicklaus and Payne Stewart have enjoyed the elegant grounds of Pinehurst Resort. Eight world-class golf courses as well as top-notch tennis courts await sportsmen. Pinehurst Resort has hosted more championship tournaments than any other golf course in America. Pinehurst Resort was also the site of the 2005 U.S. Open.

The village of Pinehurst is part of NC's beautiful Moore County, known as a 'sports and recreation sanctuary'. The rolling sandy hills among towering stands of pine trees provide for more than just golf enthusiasts. Moore County offers excellent horseracing, a training home for Olympic bicycle teams, tennis and NASCAR racing at the North Carolina Speedway in nearby Rockingham. Close to six million people live within a 100-mile radius of Moore County. The state capital of Raleigh and the Research Triangle Park are an hour's drive. The huge metropolitan areas of Charlotte, Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greensboro all lay within two hour's drive.

Census 2000 recorded Moore County's population at nearly 75,000 residents. Pinehurst reported a population of 9,706 and is Moore County's largest town. The 2000 Census showed that Pinehurst's population doubled since 1990, and estimates show that it may double again by 2020. The mild winter climate and year-round sports activities draw people of all ages to the area. Careful city planning by conscientious leaders are turning Pinehurst into an elegant and gracious community. Man-made Lake Pinehurst shimmers among forested woodland and provides fishing, swimming and boating fun. Numerous parks grace the village, many sports-oriented and others designed just to enjoy nature.

Pinehurst Village sits amidst lovely antebellum and turn of the century homes. The quaint downtown district offers wonderful shopping, especially for the antique hunter. Modern boutiques and fine dining establishments await visitors. Found throughout the region are Revolutionary and Civil War sites, as well as numerous notable museums that delight history buffs.

Pinehurst residents enjoy a strong economic foundation. The median household income was almost $59,000 per year, while the national average is close to $42,000. Over half of Pinehurst's citizens earn a bachelor's degree or even higher education. The Sandhills Community College awaits young students, while the proximity to North Carolina's larger cities offers myriad choices for superior education.

Pinehurst, North Carolina provides more than just golf. With a wonderfully temperate climate, Southern charm and grace, Pinehurst is an outstanding community, a "village in the forest".
