Aberdeen,
North Carolina
is an enchanting railroad town nestled among golf courses in the Southern
Pines metro area. With its 3,400
residents, Aberdeen is the second largest city in Moore
County, (Census 2000 data).
Moore
County and its patchwork of communities are conveniently located
within an hour's drive of the capital city of Raleigh
and within a two-hour's drive of Charlotte,
Fayetteville,
Greensboro
and Winston-Salem.
Its proximity to major metropolis cities provides Moore County
residents and businesses access to nearly six million NC
residents, all within a 100-miles radius.
While lumbering and turpentine were Aberdeen's earliest
industries, agriculture and tourism make up the current base of the
local economy. Nearby mountains provide substantial protection from
harsh weather, creating an idyllic climate
for successful crops. Area agricultural crops include an array of
berries, peaches, peppers and tomatoes. Aberdeen's most popular
tourist destinations include Aberdeen's
Historic Downtown and numerous golf resorts such as the nearby Pinehurst
Resorts. Between the towns of Aberdeen and Pinehurst,
there are 43 of the country's most renowned golf courses.
Aberdeen's Historic Downtown features delightful antique shops,
collectibles and a wide array of gift shops. In addition to the
Downtown district, Aberdeen has several other sites listed on the National
Register for Historic Places, such as the Bethesda Church and
Cemetery and Malcolm
Blue Farm.
Residents and visitors enjoy the recreational opportunities that
Aberdeen Lake has to offer. Features of the stocked lake include a
playground, picnic areas, walking trails and lighted facilities for
tennis and volleyball. Other area parks include the Carolina
Horse Park at Five Points in nearby Hoke
County. Several hundred acres of protected land encompass this
equestrian park, found between Aberdeen and Raeford.
The Horse Park hosts the traditional Stoneybrook
Steeplechase race here each April.
Residents are privy to affordable real estate, low rates of crime
and a refreshingly moderate climate. Temperatures average 45 degrees
in winter, while summer temperatures average 77 degrees.
Opportunities for education abound. Excellent public
schools pave the way to the area's top-notch higher learning
facilities, such as the Sandhills
Community College in Pinehurst.
Other nearby facilities include Elon
University, University
of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
